(Sat, April 8, 2000; bh) After yesterday’s Alpine finals, tonight the Halfpipe finals were held at the Jakobshorn in Davos/SUI. A huge crowd of approximately 5000 spectators, a huge Halfpipe and world’s best riders were doing a simply great show ending with the awards for the Worldchampions and fireworks.
The Motorola ISF World Champions 2000 in Halfpipe are: Ross Powers (USA/Burton) and Stine Brun-Kjeldaas (NOR/Duotone) The contest was very exciting and the starting field the ‘Who is Who’ in Pipe riding performing on an almost incredible level. The huge pipe allowed
the riders to go extremely high AND technical. ‘Simply Pipe-riding at its best’ as vice Champion Therry Brunner stated right after competition.
At the men’s contest tonight the decision was very tight between Markus Hurme (FIN/Oxygen) and Ross Powers (USA/Burton) where the points earned overall were exactly the same. The decision came down to the points given by the ‘Overall Impression’ Judge who had Hurme ranked higher. So only 1,4 points balanced differently were missing for Powers, who otherwise would have won the event in addition to the title. Third came (new vice World Champion) Therry Brunner (SUI/Sims), who also could crown his successful season with an event-podium place.
At the women’s it was a perfect scenario: Stine Brun Kjeldaas today was two times on the highest step of the podium, first for winning the event, then for winning the tour and so being the new World Champion. Swissgirl Martina Tscharner (K2), ISF World Champion 1999, came second tonight, but had too less points from previous competitions to get better than 4th in the
Championship. Third tonight and vice-world Champion was US Girl Kim Stacey(USA/V¸lkl).
