The ITF and the ATP Tour have reached an agreement, with the approval of the IOC, on computer points for the Olympic Tennis Event in September 2000. The main components of the agreement are as follows: – ATP Champions Race points will be awarded for players participating in the Olympic Tennis Event – The ATP Tour Entry System will be used as the basis for determining the top 48 direct acceptances in the 64 draw subject to the limitations outlined below and existing eligibility requirements – In 2000, an additional eight of the 16 invitations allocated to the ITF will be based solely on the ATP Tour Entry System – Each nation is eligible for four entries into the men’s singles – an increase of one from the previous eligibility criteria – Nations are allowed to nominate a separate doubles team by direct acceptance if the individual doubles rankings are in the top 20 of the ATP Tour Entry System. Example: If the 1999 year-end rankings were used for Davis Cup Champions, Australia, the following singles players would be eligible: Rafter (16), Philippoussis (19), Hewitt (22), and Ilie (54). Australia could choose a doubles team from the eligible singles players or select in addition up to two from the three other players that have a top twenty doubles ranking: Woodbridge (8), Stolle (9), Woodforde (11). The maximum in a team has therefore been increased from four to six. Francesco Ricci Bitti, President of the ITF, said, “This agreement is a major breakthrough for Olympic tennis and highlights that the Olympic Tennis Event has an important position in the tennis calendar. This is also further evidence of the close co-operation between the tennis authorities and I would like to thank Mark Miles, CEO of the ATP Tour for his support throughout the negotiations and recognise the key role that President Juan Antonio Samaranch played in the negotiations. We continue to have a dialogue with the WTA TOUR, and I am optimistic that we will make progress.” H.E. Juan Antonio Samaranch, President of the IOC, said, ” I welcome the agreement between the ITF and the ATP Tour and acknowledge the close co-operation between the IOC and the tennis authorities.” Mark Miles, Chief Executive of the ATP Tour added, ” I am delighted that we have been able to come to an agreement it is another sign that the parties in tennis are working closely together. Olympic points will be very valuable in the new ATP Champions Race 2000, especially as they come towards the end of the year with qualification for the co-hosted Tennis Masters Cup uppermost in the minds of the top players.” END OF RELEASE Page 2 of 2 13 January 2000 For further information, please contact: Alun James, ITF Head of Communications 44 370 277084 (m) 44 181 392 4625 (w) alun.james@itftennis.com Olympic Points for the ATP Champions Race Winner 80 * Finalist 56 Bronze Medallist 41 Other semi-finalist 31 Quarter-finalist 20 Round of 16 10 Round of 32 5 Round of 6 1 Note: A winner of a Tennis Master Series event collects 100 points and a winner of a Championship Series receives 50
