The St Helens club has swept the board in the latest round of Tetley’s Bitter Super League Monthly awards.
Team boss Ian Millward and Centre Kevin Iro have been named Tetley’s Bitter Super League Coach of the Month and Tetley’s Bitter Super League Player of the Month respectively. Both awards are for the May 2000 period.
A panel of leading Rugby League journalists and broadcasters were assembled to carry out the judging.
They decided that Ian Millward’s coaching expertise was a major factor in Saints’ unbeaten run in May and that Kevin Iro had showed outstanding form during the month.
Both winners receive a specially designed trophy and a case of Tetley’s Smoothflow.
Last month’s Player award went to Iro’s St Helens team mate Sean Long with the Coaching award going to Matthew Elliott of Top 5 rivals Bradford Bulls.
Ian Millward and Kevin Iro were presented with their awards today when the entire Saints squad took part in a fun Crown Green Bowling Challenge at Windle Bowling Club, St Helens.
Commenting on his awards, Ian Millward said,’I view this award as recognition for the quality of the team’s
performances in the past 12 games.
I feel I’m just representing all the players who’ve done the business on the field.’
Millward added, ‘It’s tremendous that Saints guys have won the Player’s Award for two consecutive months, that says something about the quality and style of our
performances.’
Former New Zealand international Iro was also delighted with his award. He said,’It’s pleasing but I’m more concerned with how the team performs than individual titles. Playing centre means you rely so much on the rest of the guys on the field.’
