The highly successful 8th All Africa Games held in Abuja Nigeria has achieved more television coverage around the world than any previous All Africa Games.

In addition to Nigerians watching wall to wall coverage of the Games on their national television network NTA, the Games have also, for the first time, been transmitted to all countries throughout the African continent. They have also been seen in a further 165 countries in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

It was the ambition of COJA Executive Director Dr Amos Adamu that ‘The Unity Games’ should be available to the widest possible audience outside Nigeria and his wishes have been fulfilled with the Games being seen by hundreds of millions of TV viewers. The television coverage of these multi-sport Games, produced by the host broadcaster NTA, has been of an exceptionally high quality, which has encouraged broadcasters to transmit many hours of coverage over the two week period of the Games.

SABC, the national broadcaster of South Africa has transmitted 12 hours of live coverage each day from Abuja and ERTU in Egypt has devoted more than 16 hours each day to live coverage. Broadcasters in Algeria, Tunisia, Namibia and Angola have been receiving over 12 hours of coverage each day and a special daily highlights programme has been transmitted each day to a further 43 countries in Africa. The French national broadcaster TV5 has been producing special programmes from the Games, which have been transmitted to over 165 countries.

International coverage of the Games has been co-ordinated by TSE Consulting who were brought in by COJA to assist them with this complex task.

TSE Managing Director, Robin Courage said ‘Nigeria should be extremely proud of the way that the nation has been viewed over the past two weeks of these magnificent Games. Dr Adamu’s and Vice President Abubakar’s wish for an Abuja Games to be viewed around the globe was visionary, but they have realised their dream and the eyes of the world have focussed on Nigeria for the past 14 days’. He added ‘The smooth organisation of the sports and excellent quality of television pictures has ensured that Nigerian sport has been seen in the best possible light by the largest international television audience ever to see the Games. Dr Adamu can certainly stand tall within any international gathering of sports administrators after this achievement’.

CFI Director of Programmes, Redha Chibani said ‘This is the best coverage that we have ever seen from an All Africa Games and we were delighted to be able to provide it to our 43 television broadcast partners throughout Africa.’

Nigeria has certainly become a major player in the international world of televised sport.
