Cuba is destined to become the world’s new golf hotspot following a series of initiatives inspired by The Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA).

PGA Golf Management, the design, development and management arm of the PGA has signed contracts with RUMBOS SA (the Cuban Government) worth in excess of £350,000 for the design of new courses in Cayo Coco and St. Miguel de Banos near the famous resort Varadero.

These will complement an existing 18 hole championship course in Varadero, which is increasing its profile in golfing circles having hosted a PGA Challenge Tour event recently.

The contracts also include the training of Cuban personnel in golf course construction.

Mr Brian Wilson MP, Minister of State from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office said: ‘We welcome the opportunity for Britain to forge closer links with Cuba through sport and in particular the PGA as it represents a major boost to the UK’s golf industry. The Government of Cuba has recognised the value of golf as a major component of its tourism strategy and this latest series of initiatives highlights the significance of the PGA and its role in global golf terms.’

A National Golf Development strategy is also being formalised by the PGA with RUMBOS SA over the next few months for all golf development, management and training in Cuba. This brings the total of PGA golf projects under development in Cuba to four, with many more planned.

During the design and construction of the courses, two Cuban golfers will be trained by the PGA at its National Training Academy at The Belfry and on their return to Cuba will provide golf management, tuition and training services to locals and tourists.

Commenting Sandy Jones, chief executive of the PGA said: ‘We believe that Cuba is one of the most exciting new markets for the expansion of golf. This new venture therefore gives us the chance to be at the forefront of taking the game to a new and undeveloped area and establishing professional golf in Cuba.’
