SPONSORS BOOST FOR BRITISH MASTERS

The British Masters enters an exciting new era in 2003. Some of the best-known names in business and golf are combining to turn the 57-year-old tournament into a unique event in the European golfing calendar.

The Daily Telegraph, Britain’s biggest-selling daily broadsheet newspaper, and Damovo, a leading Global Services company, are to be title sponsors while tournament promoters International Sports Management have completed an agreement with The European Tour and Marriott, the UK’s No.1 golf hotel operator, to host the tournament for the next three years.

The 2003 Daily Telegraph Damovo British Masters will be held at the Marriott Forest of Arden in Warwickshire, England, between June 5-8. It will feature many of the world’s top golfers including several from the victorious European Ryder Cup Team. The champion will receive £250,000 (€392,000) from a total prize fund of £1.5m (€2,352,525) one of the biggest purses available on The European Tour International Schedule.

The Daily Telegraph Damovo British Masters will become the only European Tour event to stage a major consumer golf show following a joint venture between Haymarket, leaders in the publishing and public exhibition field, and American Golf Discount, the UK’s largest golf retailer. The Daily Telegraph Golf Show will ensure that golf fans have many good reasons to visit the Marriott Forest of Arden in June.

Mark Dixon, Marketing Director at Telegraph Group Limited, said: ‘Golf is a key sport for our readers. The Daily Telegraph has initiated and sponsored a wide range of events and we are delighted to be sponsoring one of the highlights of the British golfing calendar. The inclusion of the Golf Show will make for a unique experience.’

Damovo, whose business interests cover all parts of the globe, welcomed the opportunity to be part of the spectacular. ‘Damovo will complement its involvement with The Daily Telegraph Damovo British Masters with a series of events, seminars and corporate hospitality initiatives for partners and clients. This sponsorship builds upon the considerable success Damovo has enjoyed through its role as the official business communications partner of the Jordan Grand Prix Team’, said Pearse Flynn, CEO of Damovo.

Ken Schofield, Executive Director of The European Tour, saluted the initiative of all involved. ‘We are delighted to welcome The Daily Telegraph and Damovo as the new title sponsors of the British Masters, one of the most prestigious tournaments on the European Tour International Schedule’, he said. ‘This will be the 57th edition of the British Masters and we congratulate Andrew Chandler’s ISM company for promoting a new era in the history of the tournament. We also look forward to returning to the Marriott Forest of Arden which has hosted European Tour events with great success on no fewer than nine occasions.’

David MacLaren, Director of Golf, Marriott Hotels, commented: ‘This is a fantastic agreement and we are delighted to be hosting this prestigious event. Marriott is synonymous with the provision of first class golf courses and I am certain the 7,213 yard Arden Championship Course will once again prove to be an excellent test for Europe’s top golfers.’

Andrew Chubby Chandler, ISM’s founder and Managing Director, believes that The Daily Telegraph Damovo British Masters will become a must for the European Tour’s ever-growing galaxy of stars. ‘We are committed to doing everything in our power to ensuring all the top players want to take part and every golf follower wants to attend,’ he said.
