PYEONGCHANG, South Korea (September 15) — The Korean National Assembly on September 14 fully approved a resolution to extend their complete support to the 2014 PyeongChang Winter Olympic bid.
Their resolution declared that attracting the 2014 Winter Olympics to PyeongChang is a national-level event desired by Koreans alongside the Seoul 1988 Games of the XXIV Olympiad and the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan.
The statement read that in supporting PyeongChang’s campaign to host the 2014 Winter Olympics, the National Assembly will strictly adhere to all IOC ethics regulations, and that bidding will be carried out in a fair and transparent manner.
A statement from the National Assembly said, “When PyeongChang has secured hosting rights to the 2014 Winter Olympics, it will be a highly successful event, and we have resolved to wholeheartedly support PyeongChang by considering the Winter Olympics to be a project of national importance.”
The statement continued, “We will support the construction of superior stadiums and the expansion of the multimodal transport network, and if PyeongChang is determined to be the Host City, we will provide additionally strong support by approving a special law.”
In March of this year, a 15-member National Assembly committee was formed to serve as a liaison with PyeongChang 2014. The committee made several visits to the Gangwon Province region specially to examine winter sports stadiums, transport infrastructure and other bid-related facilities and has since been energetically promoting the bid among other fellow national lawmakers.
2014 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Bid Support Resolution
To host the 2014 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Korea, is a great event of national significance as well as the hope of Koreans alongside the Seoul 1988 Games of the XXIV Olympiad and 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan.
Should the 2014 Winter Olympics be hosted by Korea, the world’s only divided country, we are convinced that it will greatly contribute to the establishment of peace, prosperity and the union of people on the Korean Peninsula as well as in Northeast Asia; and furthermore, serve to strengthen the country’s image and promote balanced national development, both at home and abroad.
The Korean National Assembly proclaims that we shall extend full support to PyeongChang in its efforts to host the 2014 Winter Olympics by thoroughly adhering to the IOC Code of Ethics and implementing clear and transparent bidding activities, and we have determined as follows:
1. The National Assembly of Korea is certain that if the 2014 Winter Olympics are held in PyeongChang, Korea, they are certain to be successful and of a high-enough caliber, based on the country’s rich experience at holding international sporting events, the mature mind of the Korean people, the nation’s prosperous economic strength, as well as the careful and accurate preparations that have been carried out to host this event.
2. Should the 2014 Winter Olympics be held in PyeongChang in Korea, the world’s only divided country, we remain certain that the Games will contribute to peace, prosperity, and the union of people on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia. At the same time, the Games will also contribute to realizing world peace, harmony and the Olympic spirit as intended by the International Olympic Committee.
3. The Korean National Assembly recognizes that hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics is a significant task of national importance, and thus, has unanimously determined to support the effort, and urge the Korean people and all government organizations to cooperate so as to enable Korea to host this international event.
4. Should the 2014 Winter Olympics be held in PyeongChang, Korea’s National Assembly shall extend full support for the construction of superior stadiums that are approved by the IOC, and for the expansion of a highly accessible multi-modal transport network, in order to ensure that those Winter Olympics will be the most successful event in the Olympic history.
5. Korea’s National Assembly declares that we have supported major international events such as the Seoul Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup by enacting a special law, as in the Seoul Olympic Committee Supporting Law and the 2002 World Cup Supporting Law, and we shall follow the same approach for the 2014 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Therefore, if the 2014 Winter Olympics are awarded to PyeongChang, we shall furnish support by enacting the 2014 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Supporting Law (tentative).
6. Korea’s National Assembly proclaims to the entire membership of the International Olympic Committee that, with the concerted will of the Korean people and the national ability to host the 2014 Winter Olympics, we shall successfully prepare for and host these Games. And we, the National Assembly, earnestly ask for the strong support and cooperation of all of the IOC member countries so that PyeongChang, Korea, can hold the 2014 Winter Olympics.
