London, England, 13 Apr 2004 – The Davis Cup Committee, at its regularly scheduled meeting today in London, reviewed the facts surrounding Denmark’s late withdrawal from their Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group II first round match against Algeria, scheduled to be played in Algiers over the weekend of 9-11 April 2004.
The Davis Cup Committee reconfirmed that Denmark is the loser of the tie and assessed the following penalties against Denmark:
Denmark will not be allowed to compete further in the 2004 Davis Cup Competition and will be relegated to Europe/Africa Zone Group III for 2005.
Denmark will receive no prize money for the 2004 competition.
Denmark will compensate Algeria for direct costs incurred by Algeria to stage this tie, such costs to be approved by the Davis Cup Committee.
Slovenia, scheduled to meet Denmark in the Europe/Africa Zone Group II Playoffs in July, will receive a walk over and will compete in the 2005 Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group II.
The members of the Davis Cup Committee are Chairman Juan Margets (ESP), Neale Fraser (AUS), Jean-Paul Loth (FRA), Nelson Nastas (BRA) and Alan Schwartz (USA).
