As the excitement mounts in the run-up to the final decision over which city should host the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, London 2012 today announced that England football captain David Beckham will be in Singapore on 5th and 6th July to lend his support to London’s campaign.
“I am honoured to have been asked to go Singapore for what will be an historic vote” said David. “I come from the east end of London where the main Olympic Park will be so I am really excited by the plans for the development of the area.
“Winning the 2012 Games will be a huge boost for sport throughout the whole of the country, and that can only be good news. It would be great if the Games came to Britain where people really love their sport. I am delighted to play my part in what I hope will be a winning campaign for London.”
David also spoke about his belief that sport can and does change lives.
“The Olympic Games in London will help to inspire young people. The fact that the new facilities will be in the area where I grew up makes this so special for me”.
London 2012 Chairman and dual Olympic gold medalist, Sebastian Coe, said:
“David Beckham is admired by young people around the world. He is a true inspiration to millions of fans and he is a wonderful ambassador for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games Bid,” Coe said.
“David and I both believe passionately that sport has the power to transform lives, and he wants to see the East London area he grew up in to be transformed by the new Olympic Park and sporting facilities that will be built in the area if the Olympic Games come to London.
“David believes – as London 2012 believes – that an Olympic Games in London has the ability to inspire young people and give a boost to sport nationally and internationally.”
Sebastian Coe said David Beckham has given the London Bid real support throughout the campaign. “We are delighted that he will be flying the flag for us on 6th July.”
David will be in Singapore ahead of London’s final presentation to the International Olympic Committee and for the final vote which happens on Wednesday 6th July. There will be several other high profile London 2012 ambassadors also attending, and further details will be announced in due course.
