The ATP confirmed today that an action against it was filed Monday in federal court by two tournaments, the RCA Championships in Indianapolis and the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington D.C.
The ATP firmly believes the action is without merit and based on multiple factual inaccuracies. The ATP plans a vigorous defense on behalf of all of its player and tournament members.
The ATP is not surprised by the action. As a governing body, the ATP must make scheduling decisions every year that serve the best interest of the overall circuit and all its members. Recently, the ATP set its 2003 tournament calendar, and these two tournaments objected to the weeks in which they are scheduled.
Throughout the scheduling process, these members repeatedly threatened a broad legal action that would include largely unrelated allegations against the ATP if they were not scheduled in their preferred weeks.
The ATP is disappointed that the RCA Championships and Legg Mason Tennis Classic have chosen to litigate based on their narrow self-interests.
The ATP is the governing body of the men’s professional tennis circuit, which features 65 tournaments around the world.
