The 3rd Belau – Mobil Games were held in Palau from 7 – 17 July. Formerly called the Interstate Games, the event is an annual event held to prepare Palau athletes for the Micronesian Games and the South Pacific Games. With 14 states and close to 1000 athletes participating, the 2000 Games were a great success.

The state of Peleliu took out the overall points score, which rewarded participation as well as results, followed by Koror State and Melekeok State. In terms of medals Hatohobei State won the most medals.

At the Closing Ceremony, the President of the Palau National Olympic Committee, Mr. Alexander Merep, congratulated the athletes and reminded them that the Games were part of the development of sports and athletes in Palau.

Many records were broken during this year’s event, and the Palau National Olympic Committee and National Sports Federations will work together to ensure that the young talents identified are provided with the opportunity for further training and competition.

The 4th Belau-Mobil Games will be held in 2002 as part of preparations for Palau’s teams to the 2002 Micronesian Games in Pohnpei (FSM) and the 2003 South Pacific Games in Fiji.
