Lillehammer 2016 marked the fourth Youth Olympic Games (YOG), a multi-sport games aimed at young athletes aged 15-18 years old. The Nordic city and surrounding area welcomed 1,100 athletes from 70 nations to compete in seven Olympic sports from 12-21 February.

Almost six years after hosting the winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2010, Sport Hosting Vancouver, the city’s dedicated agency in attracting sport events, launched the ‘Sport Hosting Vancouver Action Plan’ in December 2015 aiming to improve its ability to compete to host major sporting events.

The fourth FAI World Air Games took to the skies of Dubai, United Arab Emirates from 1 to 12 December last year, the first time the event was held outside of Europe. The eighth edition of the Rugby World Cup reached new heights in 2015 with England and Wales hosting the largest number of spectators and visitors in the tournament’s history. Almost 2.5 million people attended the 48 matches, with 460,000 overseas visitors estimated to have travelled to the region for the six-week event. The tournament was shown in 209 nations and territories by 103 licensed broadcasters, of which 43 were free-to-air, with a potential reach of 780 million households.
