Former Admirals quarterback leads Rams to Super Bowl XXXIV victory; Record-setter Warner named MVP; Jones makes game-saving tackle. FORMER Amsterdam Admirals quarterback KURT WARNER led the Louis Rams to a dramatic 23-16 victory over the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV and his record-breaking performance earned him the game’s MVP honour. Warner threw for a Super Bowl high 414 yards, eclipsing the previous best of 357 yards posted by the legendary Joe Montana as the San Francisco 49ers captured Super Bowl XXIII against the Cincinnati Bengals. World Bowl ’92 winner, linebacker MIKE JONES (Sacramento 1992), made the game-saving tackle to halt Tennessee as they pressed for the end zone in the dying seconds. Warner, who in 1998 led the NFL Europe League with 2,101 passing yards and 15 touchdowns and guided the Amsterdam Admirals to a 7-3 record, completed 24 of 45 attempts for his record yardage and threw 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. “I always believed in myself and had a whole bunch of people who believed in me,” said Warner as he received the Vince Lomdardi trophy from NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. “We’re the World Champions. How about the Rams!” Warner’s first scoring strike earned St Louis a 16-0 lead with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter and that margin appeared to have set the tone for victory until the Titans scored on their next two possessions to tie the game. The 1999 NFL MVP hit straight back with a stunning 73-yard touchdown bomb to Isaac Bruce on the first play in reply with just 1:54 remaining in the game to open a 23-16 lead before Tennessee drove to within striking distance of a touchdown and looked to force overtime. Titans quarterback Steve McNair connected with wideout Kevin Dyson, but his lunge towards the end zone came up a yard short thanks to a game-saving tackle by former Sacramento Surge linebacker MIKE JONES. In halting the Titans’ comeback Jones joined an elite collection of players who have won both a World Bowl ring and Super Bowl ring. The World Bowl ’92 winner and Rams backup quarterback PAUL JUSTIN, who led the Frankfurt Galaxy to glory in 1995, join six other NFL Europe League veterans who can claim that honour. In World Bowl ’92 Jones returned made a crucial interception that led to the game-winning touchdown, while Galaxy hero and World Bowl ’95 winning quarterback Justin led the NFL Europe League in touchdowns, yards and passer rating in 1995. Another of eight former NFL Europe League players on the roster of the victorious Rams was ex-Amsterdam Admiral TOM N_TTEN, who started Super Bowl XXXIV at guard for St Louis. Warner is the first former NFL Europe League quarterback to start a Super Bowl and was one of three quarterbacks to start an NFL playoff game this season, along with BRAD JOHNSON (London 1995) of the Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks passer JON KITNA (Barcelona 1997). A total of 12 former NFLEL passers started games during the 1999 NFL regular season.
