The Scottish Rugby Union are keen to become involved in a British Cup competition for next season.

Earlier this week English First Division Clubs accepted Rob Andrew’s plan to stage a Cup competition featuring Premiership One and Welsh/Scottish League sides, and it is now up to the Scottish and Welsh Rugby Unions to put their own seal of approval on the Competition.

The Competiton will be made up of 24 teams from Premiership One and the Celtic League and is set to be played in the autumn, with the final being staged on January 20th.

Financial stability and sponsorship revenue will be critical if the Competition is to be more successful than the disastrous Anglo-Welsh Cup in 1996. Clubs found it difficult to field teams on a regular basis and had long treks across the country in the middle of the season. With no financial incentives, the competition was disbanded.
