NEARLY 800 million NFL fans around the world are expected to tune in to watch the St. Louis Rams meet the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV in Atlanta on Sunday, January 30.
International broadcasters will televise the game to at least 182 countries and territories in 24 different languages, including nine different languages from the Georgia Dome: Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
In addition, the game will be broadcast in Arabic, Catalan, Chinese (Mandarin), Danish, Greek, Thai, Icelandic, Flemish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Hebrew, Hindu, Korean, Slovak, and Turkish in their respective countries. All international coverage of Super Bowl XXXIV will be live.
Twelve countries will broadcast on-site from the Georgia Dome: Austria (ORF), France (Canal+), Germany (SAT 1, DSF, Premier World), Holland (Fox 8), Italy (Tele Pui Due), Japan (NHK, NTV), Mexico (TV Azteca, Radio Acir), Pan Latin America and the Caribbean (ESPN), Russia (NTV Plus), Spain (Canal+), and the United Kingdom (Sky), which comprises England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
ESPN will broadcast the game in Spanish and Portuguese throughout the Caribbean and Latin America.
NFL players will be doing analysis for the international networks.
Carolina Panthers linebacker KEVIN GREENE will do commentary for BSkyB, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker MARTIN GRAMATICA, a native of Argentina, will do analysis for TV Azteca.
The international audience is looking forward to Super Bowl Sunday.
‘Lots of Germans have learned that Super Bowl is the greatest party of the year,’ says ALEXANDER ROESNER, sports coordinator of SAT 1’s Super Bowl telecast in Germany. ‘The game is a highlight event, especially for the younger people.’
There will be numerous Super Bowl events in Germany. Many Germans will take Monday off, because the live transmission of the game will run until 4:00 AM German time. In Canada, ‘Global Television anticipates incredible interest in Super Bowl XXXIV,’ says JANINE WATKINS, production coordinator for the network. ‘More than 3.5 million Canadians are expected to watch.’
Global is teaming with local sponsors to organize four tailgate parties that are being billed as the ‘largest tailgate parties outside of Atlanta.’
The parties will take place in Toronto, Winnipeg, Moncton and Vancouver. Global will be airing a series of live remotes from the parties in the four cities.
To further accommodate Canada’s Super Bowl fervor, Global is allowing the game to be broadcast at two theatres each in Toronto and Montreal, and one in Vancouver.
