Prime Video, the global streaming service of e-commerce giant Amazon, has secured exclusive broadcast rights to the Wimbledon grand slam tennis tournament in Germany and Austria until 2027.
The rights package consists of the exclusive broadcasting of all rounds from both the men's and women's tournaments, starting with the 2024 edition.
This will be available to all Prime subscribers in Germany and Austria at no extra cost.
Pay-TV giant Sky Deutschland held rights to the grand slam tournament in Germany and Austria since 2007.
Alex Green, managing director at Prime Video Sport, Europe, said: “Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament and one of the most prestigious sporting events ever, with a long history of success for German players and athletes.
“We are proud to be able to deliver exclusive coverage of the championships to all Prime members at no extra cost to their membership, in addition to exclusive coverage of the UEFA Champions League in Germany and our expanding slate of original sports documentaries.”
Paul Davies, head of broadcast, production, and media rights at Wimbledon’s All England Club, added: “We are very excited to be entering a new four-year partnership with Prime Video for Wimbledon in Germany and Austria.
“Prime Video has already demonstrated, including in tennis, how effectively it can deliver major sporting events in important global markets.
“Wimbledon and Germany have a rich heritage and we are excited to see, with Prime’s impressive household penetration, allied with its ambitious on-site production plans, how the championships can be elevated in what we consider to be one of our major European territories.”
Despite choosing not to renew the rights to Wimbledon, Sky will continue to show live tennis as it extended rights to the men's ATP Tour and acquired the women's WTA Tour.
