LaLiga has today announced Oscar Mayo will leave his role as executive director of the top Spanish soccer league.         

He will officially depart in January 2024 and is understood to be joining LaLiga giants Atletico Madrid as the club’s new general director of operations.

Mayo will oversee the team’s commercial and corporate services divisions.

The top-flight clubs have already been informed of his move, which will become official on January 15, once the league's own electoral process ends, where president Javier Tebas will seek re-election.

LaLiga has already confirmed Jorge de la Vega will step up from his role as deputy chief executive (CEO) to become the league’s new CEO.

The league said it has “spent weeks preparing for this transition” as it reorganizes its management team.

Mayo has been at LaLiga since 2017 and was promoted to the executive director role in 2021, working under Tebas.

In that position, he was credited with the “exponential” growth of commercial revenues and the signing of key partnerships, most notably with private equity firm CVC, as well as establishing joint ventures in China, the Middle East and North Africa, and the US.

He was previously the director of business, marketing, and international development where he was responsible for leading the league’s commercial strategy.

Tebas said: “Oscar has performed excellently in every position he's held at LaLiga and his work has contributed substantially to the major milestones achieved in recent years.”

De la Vega, who joined LaLiga three years ago, has also served as commercial and marketing director and has been credited with achieving 130% growth in the areas under his management, as well as being responsible for securing key commercial deals, such as the title sponsorship agreement with video game developer EA Sports.

Before joining the Spanish league, he spent more than 12 years in various management positions within the marketing department at Real Madrid.

To further strengthen its management team, LaLiga has also appointed Juan Vicente Marin as deputy CEO.

Marin has been with the league for over six years, previously serving as CEO of the LaLiga Entertainment arm.

Both de la Vega and Marin will be part of LaLiga’s executive committee upon their appointments and will between them occupy the positions held by Mayo in LaLiga’s subsidiary companies.

In addition, Marta Alonso, the league’s deputy director of corporate general management, joins the executive committee.
