The Euro 2024 national team soccer tournament continued its strong trend of viewership in Spain last night (June 24) with an average of 6.7 million viewers watching the Spanish national team advance to the round of 16 with a 1-0 win over Albania.

Broadcast on Spanish free-to-air network La 1, which is owned by the state-owned media group Television Europa, the game achieved a national viewership share of 48.1% and a peak viewership of 7.7 million.

The match boasted a total of around 12 million unique single viewers, capping of a trio of strong on-pitch performances for La Roja, and similarly good performances in the domestic viewership stakes.

Spain vs Albania, a match where Spain were overwhelming favorites and had already secured entry to the next round of the competition, naturally performed poorer than the team’s crunch match against Italy, but better than their competition opener against Croatia.

Spain vs Croatia on June 15 drew an average of 5.07 million viewers and a 49.9% audience share, while the June 20 game against Italy drew 8.55 million viewers and a 56.4% audience share, the highest of any TV broadcast in the country in 2024 and marked by a 13.4 million peak viewership.

That game also performed well in Italy where, despite the Italian national team losing 1-0 to Spain, a total of over 13.3 million viewers were recorded across two broadcast networks.

National free-to-air network Rai’s Rai 1 channel drew 12.3 million viewers and a 57.9% viewership share while coverage on pay-TV broadcaster’ Sky Italia’s Sky Sports network drew 1.05 million viewers and a 5% viewership share.

Overall, the viewing numbers equated to a viewing share of 62.9%, showcasing the interest of fans in Italy, who won the last Euros, in 2021.

For Italy’s opening Euro 2024 fixture, a 2-1 win against Albania, the total audience across those two broadcasters was 11.2 million, a viewing share of 60.5%.

Of the 51 Euro 2024 games, Sky Italia is showing 20 of them exclusively.
