SABC renews rights deal with South African FA until 2028

The broadcaster will continue to provide coverage of the South African national teams, and of the women's Super League.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) and the SABC, the country's public-service broadcaster, have extended their long-running rights deal for another four years.

The renewed agreement, running through 2028, will see the broadcaster continue to provide coverage of matches featuring the South African men’s and women’s national teams, as well as coverage of the domestic women's Super League and regional leagues.

As well as live matches, the SABC’s content will include highlights, interviews, and analysis.

The public-service broadcaster has had a relationship with SAFA for over 30 years.

However, at one stage that relationship soured, with the two parties at loggerheads for some 18 months across 2018 and 2019 over a new contract and the value of national team rights.

After a rights deal between the two expired in April 2018, some of South Africa's qualifiers for the 2019 AFCON were not shown on free-to-air TV due to the issues.

SAFA and the SABC eventually ended the dispute with a new four-year rights agreement in October 2019.

SABC group chief executive Nomsa Chabeli has now said: “This is a partnership that has been holding us in good stead for the past 32 years. We have an agreement in place now for another four-year cycle, and what’s exciting about this new cycle is that it’s not just limited to only the senior teams.”
