German sportswear and equipment brand Puma has added South American soccer’s governing body Conmebol to its growing portfolio of soccer partners through 2026.

The three-year agreement, which starts at the beginning of 2024, covers key tournaments organized by Conmebol, including the Copa America national teams competition, as well as the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana club competitions, and will see Puma supply the official match ball, referee uniforms, and staff kits during those events.

Tournaments in futsal, beach soccer, and women’s categories, pre-Olympic and youth categories organized by Conmebol will also feature sports equipment from Puma.

Conmebol’s president Alejando Dominguez said: “For Conmebol, we are greatly satisfied to partner with a globally renowned company and a brand widely recognized around the world. South American football is characterized by the talent, passion, and determination of its players. We feel that Puma also embodies these values.”

Carlos Laje, Puma’s Latin America general manager, added: “We are proud to join forces with Conmebol. We want to continue creating major milestones in football and we believe this is a unique opportunity to convey our joyful, determined, confident, and brave way of viewing sports.”

The deal comes days after Puma announced a match ball supply partnership covering tournaments organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) governing body. That agreement sees Puma become a technical partner of CAF covering several tournaments, including the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) being held in the Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11, 2024.

Both deals add to Pumas growing soccer portfolio, which also includes league partnerships with Liga Portugal,  LaLiga in Spain, the United Soccer League in the US, the second-tier English Football League, the Malaysian Football League, Serie A in Italy, and the Scottish Professional Football League and Scottish Women’s Premier League.

Elsewhere in soccer, Puma recently struck a long-term kit supply deal with Saudi Arabian soccer club Al Hilal, who finished third in the 2022-23 Saudi Pro League and are one of four teams in the league to have been taken over by the country’s sovereign wealth Public Investment Fund as part of its continued strategic investment in sports.

It was announced in May, meanwhile, that the brand is to become an official supplier to motor racing’s premier Formula 1 series from 2024.

Conmebol, meanwhile, added South American e-commerce heavyweight Mercado Libre as a competition sponsor in early September.

Soccer stands as the most active and main beneficiary of the payment sector's sponsorship spend

Engagement with the payments sector is not a new trend for sports rights holders, considering the year 2023, the sector remains one of the most profitable partners to the sports industry, with close to $2.5 billion commitment through 1385 active partnerships. Soccer is the primary recipient of the payment sector's $2.5 billion commitment to the sports industry in 2023, with soccer deals accounting for over 30% of total payment sponsorship value.
