Formula One (F1), the elite tier of single-seater motor racing, has agreed a deal with Central European commercial sports broadcaster Nova Sport from 2024 onwards.

Nova, which broadcasts in both the Czech Republic and neighboring Slovakia, announced through its social media that it had successfully won the rights to show F1 again. The network had previously shown the racing series from 2006 to 2014.

After Nova lost the rights in 2014, F1 was shown by media group AMC Networks International (AMCNI), which broadcast the motor racing league on its Sport 1 and Sport 2 channels in the two countries and currently holds the rights until the end of 2023.

One of Nova’s main competitors in the region, AMCNI currently also holds the broadcast rights to soccer’s UEFA national team competitions in both Slovakia and the Czech Republic, including the Slovakian men’s national team, until 2028. It also holds other soccer rights including Spain’s Copa del Rey and Italy’s Coppa Italia.

Nova Sport also focuses on soccer, broadcasting the 2022 World Cup as well as holding the rights to a number of European soccer leagues such as the continent’s elite club competition, the UEFA Champions League.

Nova did not mention an end date for its coverage contract of F1, however, per reports, it may not last five years.

BusinessF1 magazine reported that Apple, which operates global streaming service AppleTV, is looking to bid for the global rights to the racing series.

The deal will reportedly see a “sliding scale of exclusivity” that would see Apple begin at 25% exclusivity and scale up to 100% control over the rights within five years, owing to the expiry of broadcast contracts over that time.

If this is the case, then Nova’s rights tie-up with the racing league will not last as long as its original eight-year tenure.
