Multiple records for women’s soccer have been broken during the first two weeks of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup (WWC) in New Zealand and Australia.

By August 4, over 1.71 million tickets had been sold, surpassing pre-event targets, while the tournament has now officially become the best-attended WWC ever.

The 27,706 fans who attended the round of 16 match between the US (reigning champions) and Sweden in Melbourne, Australia, yesterday (August 6) took the tournament’s number past the total of 1,353,506 who watched action during the previous record-setting WWC, in Canada in 2015. The US were knocked out by Sweden, constituting a substantial shock.

The majority of ticket sales have come from Australia.

In terms of average attendance, matches this tournament are attracting 25,476 fans each, an increase of 29% from the equivalent figures at the previous WWC in France four years ago.

Record attendance for standalone women’s soccer matches have been broken in Australia (75,784) and New Zealand (42,958) meanwhile.

In terms of TV viewing figure records, meanwhile, notable highlights include China’s match against England being viewed by 53.9 million, and more US viewers watching their side’s clash with the Netherlands - 6.4 million - than for any previous WWC group stage match in history.

In Australia, meanwhile, commercial network Seven brought in its highest audience of the year for the home side beating Canada in their crucial last group stage fixture.

Elsewhere, traffic on FIFA’s array of digital platforms has come to an average of 2.4 million unique users daily. The volume of total traffic has already surpassed the number set across the whole of the 2019 WWC.

The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, running between July 20 and August 20, is currently halfway through the round of 16 knockout stage.
