MotoGP announces GoPro as official action camera

GoPro will become the official action camera of the motorcycle series.

Alex Donaldson September 01 2023

Wearable camera brand GoPro has signed an agreement with Dorna Sports, the commercial rights holder and organizer of motor racing's premier MotoGP series, to become the competition's official wearable action camera.

The new multi-year partnership will see GoPro cameras strapped onto riders during races, with GoPro content shared across MotoGP sites and social media channels, including onboard lap previews of MotoGP tracks.

GoPro branding will also be displayed trackside across the racing calendar and the camera company will be the title sponsor of a yet-to-be announced grand prix in 2024.

Marc Saurina, head of global commercial partnerships at Dorna Sports, said: "We’re very happy to welcome GoPro back to MotoGP. GoPro has grown to become a byword for adrenaline, quality, and action, and we very much share those values in our sport, so it makes a perfect partnership.

“We’re really looking forward to working with them again and bringing some fresh digital content to our fans around the world, as well as seeing the GoPro name trackside throughout much of the calendar and center stage at a Grand Prix in 2024."

The partnership with MotoGP furthers GoPro’s deepening ties to the world of motorsport. GoPro is also the action camera provider of the four-wheel drifting series Formula DRIFT, a partnership it announced earlier in August.

MotoGP has announced a spate of deals in the last month, mostly regarding the continuation of TV rights, as the season continues. Most recently, MotoGP renewed its deal with ServusTV to broadcast the series in Austria until after 2026.

Cosmote TV in Greece, which has broadcast MotoGP since 2012, also extended its exclusive broadcast partnership for Greece until at least 2026. Both Cosmote and ServusTV will also broadcast the second-tier Moto2 and third-tier Moto3 competitions, as well as the MotoE World Championship and the Red BullMotoGP Rookies Cup.

Soccer stands as the most active and main beneficiary of the payment sector's sponsorship spend

Engagement with the payments sector is not a new trend for sports rights holders, considering the year 2023, the sector remains one of the most profitable partners to the sports industry, with close to $2.5 billion commitment through 1385 active partnerships. Soccer is the primary recipient of the payment sector's $2.5 billion commitment to the sports industry in 2023, with soccer deals accounting for over 30% of total payment sponsorship value. Some of the largest payment sector companies, such as MasterCard and Visa, are at the forefront of sports sponsorship, aligning with popular sports entities to boost customer preference and increase their market share globally.
