StarTimes, the pay-television operator in Sub-Saharan Africa, has secured non-exclusive English-language rights to Spanish soccer’s LaLiga through the 2028-29 season.

The broadcaster will share rights with Tanzania-based pay-TV network AzamTV, which disclosed its own deal with the league exclusively to Sportcal (GlobalData) earlier this week.

The move will see the top Spanish league have two English-language rightsholders in the region for the next five campaigns.

South African pay-TV giant SuperSport currently holds full English-language rights until the end of 2023-24. International heavyweight Canal Plus, meanwhile, holds French-language rights in the same region under a multi-year deal signed at the start of the 2022-23 campaign.

StarTimes will provide live coverage of LaLiga matches across the Sub-Saharan Africa region, while AzamTV will show the league specifically in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The broadcasters will additionally show highlights, analysis, interviews, and behind-the-scenes content.

Melcior Soler, LaLiga’s audiovisual director, has said: “LaLiga has a relevant audience in the Sub-Saharan region, where we always look to deliver our best-in-class audiovisual product to our fans.

“Reaching all LaLiga lovers in a key region as this is essential for us, and partnering with AzamTV and StarTimes is nothing but the best move.”

Tiffany Shao, sports acquisition and operation director of StarTimes, added: “We are thrilled to share the news of our successful bid for the LaLiga broadcast rights, securing access to one of the most prestigious soccer competitions globally.

“Soccer is at the heart of StarTimes’ sports content strategy, and this latest acquisition underscores our dedication to delivering top-notch soccer entertainment to our subscribers.”
