Indonesia enters talks to co-host 2034 World Cup

The country would join Australia, Malaysia, and Singapore as co-hosts.

Indonesia has entered discussions with Australia about a possible joint bid to host soccer’s governing body FIFA’s flagship 2034 FIFA World Cup with Malaysia and Singapore, according to the president of the country's football federation (PSSI).

The news follows FIFA inviting member associations from Asia and Oceania to bid for the rights to the 2034 edition last week after announcing Spain, Morocco and Portugal would host the 2030 World Cup, with Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina staging the opening games.

The awarding of rights across three continental governing bodies had seemingly paved the way for Saudi Arabia to host the 2034 World Cup, with FIFA rules stating now only Asia or Oceania can bid for the rights to that edition.

The Saudis had initially announced it would bid for the 2030 tournament alongside Greece and Egypt but withdrew earlier this year, however within hours of FIFA’s announcement, the oil-rich kingdom confirmed its plan to bid for the competition alone.

The Sydney Morning Herald quoted PSSI President Erick Thohir as saying: “We are discussing (a bid) with Australia. When I visited Malaysia and Singapore both countries expressed interest to join Indonesia and Australia."

Football Australia released a statement last week saying it was "exploring the possibility of bidding for the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup and/or the FIFA World Cup 2034."

The next World Cup in 2026, which will feature 48 teams, will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Soccer stands as the most active and main beneficiary of the payment sector's sponsorship spend

Engagement with the payments sector is not a new trend for sports rights holders, considering the year 2023, the sector remains one of the most profitable partners to the sports industry, with close to $2.5 billion commitment through 1385 active partnerships. Soccer is the primary recipient of the payment sector's $2.5 billion commitment to the sports industry in 2023, with soccer deals accounting for over 30% of total payment sponsorship value.
