India’s Shah confirmed as new ICC chair

Jay Shah, 35, has headed up the Board of Control for Cricket in India since 2019.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) governing body has today unveiled India’s Jay Shah as its next chair, to take up the role in December.

Shah, 35, who has served as the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since late 2019, was the sole nominee for the top job, following the news that current chair Greg Barclay would not seek re-election when his term comes to an end later this year.

ICC directors were required to submit nominations by today in order to have their name put forward - and evidently, only Shah did so.

Shah has now said: “I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket. We stand at a critical juncture where it is increasingly important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies, and introduce our marquee events to new global markets. Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.”

As well as heading up the BCCI - the most powerful board of the ICC’s various member nations - Shah has also been chair of the Asian Cricket Council since early 2021.

He will have to relinquish his BCCI role after taking over as ICC chair, however.

Barclay, previously the chair of New Zealand Cricket and a director of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup (held across that country and Australia in 2015), was first elected to head up the sport’s governing body in November 2020.

He was then re-elected unopposed in November 2022.
