The Brazilian heavyweight broadcaster Globo has secured rights to the home games of nine teams from the country’s top-tier Serie A soccer league between 2025 and the conclusion of the 2029 campaign.

The partnership covers exclusive rights - across free-to-air, pay-TV, and streaming - to the home games of Serie A teams Flamengo, Palmeiras, São Paulo, Santos, Atlético-MG, Grêmio, Vitória, Bahia, and Red Bull Bragantino.

A number of these sides, between them, formed the original Libra bloc in May 2022, with the aim of striking a new broadcast rights deal from next year onwards.

It has been reported that Globo will be paying R$1.17 billion annually between these sides, with the all-encompassing current broadcast rights deal for Serie A action (involving all teams) expiring at the end of the ongoing 2024 campaign.

Aside from the teams mentioned above, most of the other Serie A sides (11) currently form the LFU group - Libra and the LFU were both formed at roughly the same time, with different ideas on how to best negotiate broadcast rights deals for Brazilian soccer in the future, past this year.

The heavyweight team Corinthians, meanwhile, is still weighing up offers from both groups.

It has also been reported that if Corinthians sign up with Libra, Globo’s fee will rise to R$1.3 billion annually (R$6.5 billion over the five seasons).

Silvio Mattos, Libra's chief executive, said: “We talked to absolutely all the different market players and media groups. We understand that the content distribution model of the Brazilian Championship will evolve and we will have new platforms participating in this arena.

“Globo is not only the best partner, it is also the company that best knows Brazilian football. Inside and outside. From clubs to audiences. Globo has a cultural and historical symbiosis with Brazilian football and, together with Libra, will increasingly contribute to this process.”

Globo’s sports rights director, Fernando Manuel, added: “We are happy with the confidence that Libra clubs have in the experience that Globo offers to fans. It is a big first step in continuing this work. We continue to believe in the union of all clubs in favor of an increasingly better and more competitive Serie A.”
