German heavyweight broadcaster Sky Deutschland has agreed a substantial live rights deal with the Sportdeutschland.TV streaming platform run by DOSB New Media, covering premier tennis and ice hockey.

Through a multi-year tie-up unveiled yesterday, Sky has secured rights to tennis’ US Open grand slam tournament, held by Sportdeutschland.TV since last July, while that platform has in turn received access to all live broadcasts on Sky of North American ice hockey’s top-tier NHL. Sky currently holds live NHL rights through 2024-25.

Sky and Sportdeutschland.TV will now broadcast the upcoming 2024 US Open in parallel, with Sky thus adding another major tournament to its existing significant tennis offering (it already has long-term ATP men’s and WTA women’s deals in place).

Sky will now be able to show the US Open - in which Germany’s Alexander Zverev is among the top contenders - across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, and South Tyrol.

For the NHL aspect of the deal, meanwhile, from 2024-25 onwards all Sky broadcasts of the league will be shown as a pay-per-view option on Sportdeutschland.TV. The offer covers 300 NHL fixtures per campaign, including the post-season playoffs and the Stanley Cup Finals.

For Sportdeutschland.TV, the NHL addition comes on top of the service’s existing ice hockey portfolio, which includes top-tier International Ice Hockey Federation events and the top German domestic league.

The last significant Sky Deutschland rights deal came in February, when the pay-TV broadcaster extended its long-standing tie-up with English soccer’s top-tier Premier League, through 2027-28.

The broadcaster’s NHL deal, meanwhile, was unveiled in September 2021.

There are currently a handful of German players contracted to NHL teams, including Leon Draisaitl at the Edmonton Oilers and Moritz Seider at the Detroit Red Wings.
