Germany throws hat in the ring for 2029 UEFA Women’s Euros

The country will submit an expression of interest to UEFA in hosting the national teams tournament.

German soccer’s DFB governing body will bid to host the UEFA Women’s European Championship national team tournament in 2029.

In a statement issued late last week, the DFB’s president Bernd Neuendorf said the tournament “represents a flagship project for us.”

Germany last hosted the Women’s Euro in 2001, winning that event on home soil back when it was an eight-team tournament.

It is understood that other bids for the 2029 event will come from Portugal, Denmark, and Sweden.

The decision to proceed with a bid was confirmed on Friday by the DFB’s executive committee, with the declaration of interest for an application to be sent through to European soccer’s governing body UEFA by tomorrow (September 24).

UEFA will then send detailed requirements to all interested parties by October 1, with preliminary bid documents then due for submission by March 12, 2025.

The deadline for signed legal bidding documents, meanwhile, is August 28.

UEFA expects to announce the host(s) of the 2029 Women’s Euro - which will incorporate 16 teams - by December next year.

Following the expression of interest being submitted, the DFB will write to the cities and stadiums that the body plans to use as potential host venues.

Germany are by far and away the most successful team in terms of Women’s Euro success, having won the tournament on seven occasions as a unified nation and once as West Germany.

The last edition of the event took place in England two years ago and was won by the hosts, while the 2025 tournament will take place across eight venues in Switzerland between July 2 and 27.

Switzerland beat off competition from a four-country Scandinavian bid, as well as submissions from France and Poland, to secure hosting rights.

In terms of hosting other UEFA events, earlier this year Germany staged the 2024 men’s Euros, with 24 teams playing games across 10 host cities (Berlin, Munich, Dortmund, Stuttgart, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Cologne, and Leipzig).

Heike Ullrich, general secretary at the DFB, commented: “We are looking forward to the application process with confidence, because the exciting UEFA Euro 2024, our excellent stadium infrastructure and the great cooperation with the host cities and our local contacts have shown that we are a good and reliable host for this type of major sporting event.”
