FIS and Viaplay in Nordic extension through 2030

The skiing competitions covered for the next five years include the FIS Alpine World Cup, and Cross-Country World Cup.

Nordic media heavyweight Viaplay has today snapped up exclusive skiing rights to a range of top-tier competitions until 2030.

The major deal struck with the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) comes as an extension to a previous agreement, running between 2021-26, that was announced in 2019 and comes to an end following the 2025-26 season.

The competitions covered for the next cycle include the FIS Alpine World Cup, the FIS Cross-Country World Cup, and other premium events.

This tie-up has been brokered by Infront, the agency that holds distribution and marketing rights for the FIS (in all countries except Austria) through a long-term deal unveiled in mid-2024.

The coverage will be provided by Viaplay’s range of platforms and channels across its key Nordic markets.

The FIS and its national ski associations (NSAs) finalized the process to centralize international media and broadcast rights for World Cup events in mid-December.

This came eight months after the FIS Council voted in favor of centralization, which was a core part of Johan Eliasch’s presidency when he was re-elected for a full four-year term in 2022.

This deal has been announced at the same time as Viaplay has unveiled a bumper new agreement with the European Handball Federation through 2030.

Viaplay’s Nordic top-tier rights stable also includes top European soccer, motor racing’s Formula 1, golf's majors, and North American ice hockey's NHL.

The broadcaster has had to retreat into its key Nordic markets over the last year, after dealing with serious financial issues across 2023-24.
