FIFA opens World Cup media rights tender in Indonesia

The rights cover the men’s World Cups in 2026 and 2030, and the 2027 and 2031 women's editions.

World soccer’s governing body FIFA has begun the tender process covering media rights in Indonesia to its next four World Cup tournaments - two men’s and two women’s.

The rights, which are now the subject of an invitation to tender (ITT), cover the men’s FIFA World Cup in both 2026 and 2030, as well as the FIFA Women’s World Cup (WWC) in 2027 and 2031.

The deadline for bids is 10am Central European Time on May 21, and entities wishing to participate in the tender should email indonesia-media-rights@fifa.org to obtain the necessary documentation.

For the last men’s World Cup, Qatar 2022, Indonesian soccer fans could watch the action via a range of channels owned by the Emtek media group (which bought rights from the Infront sports marketing agency). For the 2023 WWC, meanwhile, coverage of the tournament in Australia and New Zealand was only available via the FIFA+ streaming service.

The men’s tournament in 2026 will be staged across Mexico, the US, and Canada, while the 2030 edition is set to be mainly hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco (with the opening games in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, to celebrate the World Cup’s centenary).

The hosts of the women’s 2027 and 2031 tournaments, meanwhile, have yet to be unveiled by FIFA. The 2027 tournament will be allocated to its host or hosts on May 17, at the FIFA Congress in Bangkok, Thailand.

Indonesia have only qualified for the men’s World Cup once (in 1938, competing as the Dutch East Indies), and have never qualified for the women’s edition.

Last December, the MNC Indonesian media group secured exclusive broadcast rights to the 2024 UEFA European Championships national teams soccer tournament.

This media rights tender in Indonesia follows on from a process launching in the UK earlier this month, in that case covering rights to the next two men’s World Cups. The deadline for submissions from UK broadcasters is April 29.

In March, meanwhile, media rights tenders for the 2026 and 2030 tournaments were kicked off by FIFA in six European markets.

That month also saw French media company Groupe M6 secure exclusive free-to-air rights to air those two editions.
