Motor racing’s iconic Formula 1 (F1) has today unveiled a multi-year tie-up with Aggreko, the global energy solutions firm.
Through this agreement, Aggreko will deliver low-carbon energy generation systems to all Grands Prix in Europe, from the 2025 season onwards, becoming an official provider to the series in the process.
There are 10 European Grands Prix (across nine countries) scheduled for the 2025 season.
Such a system was first piloted last year at the Austrian Grand Prix, when a power generation compound based on renewable energy sources “such as hydrotreated vegetable oil, biofuel, solar panels, and battery storage systems” was tested.
These systems, from next year, will power the various F1 teams’ garages and motorhomes each race weekend in Europe. They will also supply facilities such as the pit wall, the timing room, the Formula 1 Event Technical Centre, and the international TV compound.
F1 has a goal of becoming Net Zero (no longer adding to the total amount of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere) by 2030.
After its first outing last year, the system has so far been trialled at races in Austria and Hungary in 2024, while another test will take place at the Monza Grand Prix this coming weekend (September 1).
This multi-year agreement has been unveiled with Aggreko having already announced a deal with all-electric single-seater motor racing series Formula E this year.
That tie-up involves Aggreko ensuring Formula E events are “powered via renewable energy such as biofuel generators, solar arrays, and the latest battery technology.”
Aggreko is also now supplying six 300kVA batteries for charging all the Formula E cars, as well as various battery sizes for powering the overall race circuits.
Ellen Jones, head of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) at F1, has now said: “The entire paddock is part of our Net Zero by 2030 commitment, and solutions like the low-carbon energy generation system combine technological innovation with coordinated action.
“We look forward to continuing to showcase how we can deliver more sustainable events.”
Late last month, F1 brought in the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) as a new sponsor.
The tie-up builds on the existing relationship between the LVCVA and F1, through which the authority is already a commercial partner of the Las Vegas Grand Prix - which held its inaugural edition last November.
