Former UEFA executive Alex Phillips has been named as the new secretary general of FIFPRO, while Argentinian Sergio Marchi has become the international soccer players’ union’s first non-European president.

The appointments were made at the global player union’s general assembly in Indonesia.

Phillips will commence his new role on 1 March 2025.

FIFPRO has been without a permanent secretary general since Jonas Baer-Hoffmann stepped down at the end of 2023.

Phillips previously served as the head of governance and compliance at European soccer's governing body UEFA. He spent a total of around 12 years at that Swiss organization in various roles.

Marchi, meanwhile, is currently the general secretary of Argentinian player union FAA and president of FIFPRO South America.

The former defender, who played for clubs such as San Lorenzo, Almirante Brown, and Union Santa Fe, was elected as FIFPRO president after commanding a majority vote by the global board.

Marchi has now said: “It is a great honour to be elected as the new FIFPRO president. It is a lot of responsibility and it is going to be a huge challenge, and one which requires a big response and a lot of commitment.

"This is the start of a new process. The future will present its challenges, but they are challenges we can face with hope."

Marchi is among a revamped 12-person association board that was ratified at the general assembly.

The board also features Magnus Erlingmark (Sweden), Joaquim Evangelista (Portugal), Maheta Molango (England), Geremie Njitap (Cameroon), Fernando Revilla (Peru), Stefano Sartori (Italy), Karin Sendel (Israel), Alejandro Sequeira (Costa Rica), David Terrier (France), Fraser Wishart (Scotland) and Takuya Yamazaki (Japan).
