The BBC, the UK's public-service broadcaster, has agreed a new multi-year deal with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), an alliance of public-service broadcasters across Europe, to broadcast European Athletics Championships action up to and including 2027.

The deal debuts with this year's European Athletics Championships in Rome from June 7 to 12, 2024, while also including the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, the 2025 and 2027 European Athletics Indoor Championships, and the annual European Cross Country Championships from 2024 to 2027.

The Rome event - offering fans the last chance to see most of these athletes before the Paris Olympics in July and August -will be shown on the BBC iPlayer streaming service, the BBC Sport website, and the BBC Sport app.

The BBC's athletics coverage also includes relevant events from the Olympic Games, the World Athletic Championships, UK Athletics' Major Events series, the Diamond League, London Marathon, and the Great North Run.

Meanwhile, the EBU has revealed that the 2024 European Athletics Championships will also be broadcast live globally by at least 34 broadcasters, including 32 EBU Members.

That host of networks will provide free-to-air coverage, and complementary coverage of the Championships will also be streamed live on the Eurovision Sport platform, with all qualifiers and events not covered by broadcasters set to be made available on the platform.

The EBU will also serve as the host broadcaster for the event, with 29 additional broadcasters on site. 21 networks will provide live commentary from the stadium, while 34 will be in the mixed zone.

The event will feature more than 50 cameras within the stadium to cover track and field events, including 3D cablecams, railcams, and segways. 12 additional cameras will cover external races, including a helicopter for the half marathon, and the debut of the use of drones and monowheels as mobile cameras.

Last month, the EBU announced a significant restructuring of the leadership team within its sports division.

Andreas Aristodemou will assume the role of director of Olympics, succeeding Pascal Fratellia who recently stepped down from the position.
