Bild, the Axel Springer-owned German media outlet, will provide free livestreaming coverage of several matches from the upcoming Wimbledon Championship tennis tournament after securing a sublicensing agreement with pay-TV operator Sky Deutschland.

The deal will see the outlet’s Bild and Sport Bild platforms gain rights to livestream one match per round from the first round until the quarter-finals, starting with the first-round match featuring Germany’s Alexander Zverev.

Under the terms of the agreement, Bild can only show five Sky matches over the course of the tournament, which runs from July 3 to 16, and will not be able to show more than one match featuring the same player.

Hans Gabbe, Sky Deutchland’s senior vice president of sports rights and commercialization, said: “With this showcase, we want to inspire even more viewers for great tennis and convince them of the high-quality broadcasts from Sky Sport.”

Sky holds rights to the tournament in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in a renewed long-term deal struck during last year’s event. The broadcaster has been showing Wimbledon in Germany since 2007 and aired 250 hours of live coverage during last year’s event.

In 2018, Sky sublicensed free-to-air rights to the women’s final featuring Germany’s Angelique Kerber to public service broadcaster ZDF, which was watched by an average of 2.3 million viewers.

Whisper, the UK-based sports broadcasting production firm, will supply the world feed, international highlights, a creative preview firm, and an official film of the competition and is also responsible for generating a pool of engaging content for tournament organizer the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC) for the 2023 and 2024 editions of the competition.

Technical broadcast delivery for the competition, meanwhile, will be provided by NEP UK, the regional division of the NEP Group production technology and services firm, under a recently renewed partnership agreement with AELTC.
