North American basketball’s NBA has entered into a multi-year deal in Mexico with the Amazon Prime Video streaming service.

Through the tie-up, the Prime Video platform will cover more than 50 regular-season and playoff games each year under the terms of the deal.

The first fixture will take place on Monday (January 22), as the Philadelphia 76ers take on the San Antonio Spurs.

There will be Spanish-language commentary, while Amazon will also make the NBA’s League Pass subscription service available on Prime Video in Mexico.

The current NBA broadcast partners in Mexico are the Star+ streaming service run by ESPN and Disney, and the ViX platform run by TUDN.

So far, around 30 NBA games (across both the regular season and pre-season contests) have taken place in Mexico since 1992. NBA commissioner Adam Silver has confirmed at least two for 2024-25.

Rafael Elia, the NBA’s vice president of global media distribution for Latin America, said: “As we continue to identify innovative ways to ensure fans around the world have diversified access to NBA games, we look forward to collaborating with Prime Video to deliver a premium viewing experience to fans in Mexico.”

Paulo Koelle, director of Prime Video Latin America, added: “We are excited to bring the NBA closer to our customers, with an offer that will serve both casual fans, with games included in the Amazon Prime membership, and die-hard fans, with the option to add a subscription to NBA League Pass.”

Prime Video will cover 37 games across the remainder of the 2023-24 NBA regular season, through until early April, and games will be shown across Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. The current campaign began on October 24 and runs through the NBA finals in June.

The deal adds to Prime Video’s existing NBA coverage in Brazil. The streaming service has held rights in that country since a deal was struck in October 2022.

Domestically, meanwhile, NBA live rights (aside from local-area deals) are held by ESPN and TNT, with that agreement set to expire after the 2024-25 campaign.

The most recent NBA media rights deal was unveiled in late November when Hong Kong broadcaster Now TV came on board as a partner.

The PCCW-owned broadcaster will show more than 300 live games each season, including the regular season, NBA All-Star, the playoffs, and the NBA finals.
