ABC, the Australian public-service broadcaster, has today acquired domestic audio rights to the upcoming Australian Open tennis grand slam.
Under a deal with the Tennis Australia governing body, the broadcaster will provide coverage from the event live and ad-free via the ABC local radio network and ABC listen digital platform for the first time since 2015.
Radio rights were previously held by Sports Entertainment Network, the multi-platform Australian media company.
ABC listen will cover all the action, including the morning and evening sessions live and uninterrupted each day of the tournament, through a dedicated Australian Open button.
The broadcaster will also provide shoulder programming alongside the live coverage across its platforms.
The Australian Open will run from January 14 to 28.
Live television coverage of the grand slam will be provided in Australia by commercial broadcaster Nine Network, which has a deal running through 2025 after signing a long-term renewal with Tennis Australia last year.
Cedric Cornelis, Tennis Australia’s chief commercial officer, said: “We are delighted to partner with the ABC in an agreement that will allow existing and new fans alike to experience the thrilling action of the Australian Open.”
Ben Latimer, ABC head of audio, added: “The ABC is committed to making our iconic sporting moments accessible to all Australians. I’m delighted we have the opportunity to bring the Australian Open to our audiences live and free on our broadcast and digital platforms.”
