Italian men’s soccer's top-tier Serie A and social media heavyweight Meta (owner of the popular Facebook and Instagram sites) have struck a partnership to work together in combating online piracy.
This equates to the first such collaboration between Serie A and a major technology firm, and has been officially announced today.
Through this agreement, Serie A will secure access to Meta tools for real-time monitoring, reporting, and immediate removal of Serie A games illegality streamed on Facebook and Instagram.
Specifically, Serie A now has access to Meta’s Rights Manager content management system which allows them to monitor when its content is uploaded to Facebook or Instagram, while Meta has also developed an IP Reporting Centre and an IP Reporting API.
The league has said these systems will allow it and other rights holders to “build custom systems for reporting content that violates their intellectual property rights.”
Luigi de Siervo, chief executive of Serie A, has said: “To stop this crime, which not only damages our industry but deprives it of substantial resources that would raise the level of entertainment for all fans, we are acting in every direction. I thank Meta for the support and automated tools made available, demonstrating not only that collaboration between rights holders and platforms is possible, but starting today the life of online pirates will be increasingly difficult."

By GlobalDataOverall, this move comes as part of a wider effort by Serie A to crack down on the illegal streaming of its matches, which can cause broadcasters and sports properties serious financial pain.
Luca Colombo, Meta’s country director for Italy, added: “We are proud to work with Lega Serie A to fight online piracy. Partnership, collaboration, and dialogue with content owners like them are the key to finding and removing online sports piracy.”
