In 1999 Mr. Stanley Roberts, an NBA player, was sanctioned by the NBA for the use of amphetamines and banned from NBA competitions for a period of two years. His subsequent attempt to register as a player for a European basketball team was stopped by FIBA which, applying its own regulations, banned him from FIBA competitions for two years based on the earlier NBA doping sanction.

The World Championship for Junior Men has been moved from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Thessaloniki, Greece. Greece stepped forward to host the event due to the recent outbreak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in the Asian region; the championship will take place on the dates foreseen, July 10 – 20, 2003.

The International Basketball Federation FIBA and the Union of European Basketball Leagues ULEB signed an agreement today which regulates the details of the re-unification of the two European top club competitions SuproLeague and Euroleague as of the 2001/2002 season. The agreement still has to be ratified by the General Assembly of the Standing Conference which meets on 25th – 27th May 2001.
