Ahead of its inaugural season-ending Final Six tournament later this month, the EuroLeague Women basketball competition has added Spanish flag carrier airline Iberia as that event’s latest official partner.
The prominent airline has secured significant branding presence around the event, which is organized by the European arm of the global basketball governing body FIBA.
Speaking on the partnership, FIBA Europe president Jorge Garbajosa commented that it “strengthens our strategic commitment to women's basketball,” while FIBA Europe properties managing director Monika Puchner added: “With the support of Spain's reference airline, the flagship event of EuroLeague Women will push higher the limits of excellence both on and off the court.”
Iberia has shown strong support for Spanish basketball in recent months, and in January signed on to partner the Spanish Copa del Rey and Endesa Mini Cup domestic competitions through a deal with the country’s ACB league organizer.
The EuroLeague Final Six will take place in Zaragoza, Spain, across April 9-13 at the city’s 10,744-capacity Pabellon Principe Felipe, with Valencia Basket the sole Spanish team taking part.
Earlier this week FIBA Europe secured enhanced broadcast coverage for the Final Six, courtesy of an expansion of its broadcast partnership with global sports streaming service DAZN.
Under the expansion, DAZN becomes the exclusive broadcaster for the Final Six competition in France, as well as the broadcast partner of the event in all other countries not covered by existing agreements.
DAZN will also be the exclusive English language partner for the event globally and will also cover all Final Six games in French for local broadcast.
DAZN’s original agreement with the league's operating body, FIBA Europe, was signed ahead of the 2024-25 season and sees the platform provide coverage of EuroLeague Women in several of its territories as a global broadcast partner.
Two fixtures per gameday are streamed on the platform for free, including a ‘Game of the Week’ exclusive to DAZN.
The format for the 16-team competition was revamped ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, with the regular season now split into two rounds.
Initially competing in four groups of four during the first round, the bottom-placed sides now exit and move to the second-tier EuroCup Women, while the other 12 clubs continue to the second round of the top-tier EuroLeague.
The competition has also introduced a play-in round before the Final Six, where the eventual champion is determined.
