FIFA, soccer’s world governing body, and blockchain gaming studio Mythical Games have collaborated to launch a new soccer mobile video game.

FIFA Rivals, scheduled for release in summer 2025 on iOS and Android, will focus on arcade gameplay, rather than the simulation-style gameplay seen in FC 25, the Electronic Arts video game giant’s soccer game series that split from FIFA in 2023 after 30 years.

Marking the next phase of FIFA’s gaming and esports portfolio, the free-to-play collaboration with Mythical Games will involve players building a team and using it to compete against other players.

It will include in-game and web marketplaces that utilize the Mythos blockchain to allow players to “own, buy, sell, and trade” soccer players.

Mattias Grafström, Fifa secretary general, said: “The game is an innovative and accessible addition to our expanding gaming and esports portfolio.”

Mythical Games, founded in 2018, also runs a similar mobile NFL Rivals game that has over 6 million downloads.

The FIFA release forms a part of the company’s large expansion in 2025, with Blankos and Pudgy Party also being added to the studio’s portfolio, which currently only includes the aforementioned NFL Rivals game and the Nitro Nation World Tour racing game.

In June, FIFAe also partnered with car soccer video game Rocket League to announce the first-ever FIFAe World Cup this year following FIFA’s split with EA Sports, as well as an esports partnership with Japanese video game developer Konami’s eFootball game.

EA Sports stopped producing the FIFA game, which had been one of the most profitable franchises in video game history, generating a reported $20 billion in sales over the last two decades, in mid-2023 – at which point FIFA said it would now release its own video games.

However, the body has so far not managed to release a competitor to EA Sports’ FC series.
