Viaplay Group, the European media and entertainment heavyweight, has today (February 1) announced a new distribution deal in the Netherlands with Solcon, a telecoms firm owned by KPN.
Through the agreement, new Solcon customers will be able to access live Viaplay streaming for free, while existing subscribers will be able to add Viaplay for €9.99 ($10.87) monthly.
Viaplay’s regular price is €15.99 each month, having launched in the Netherlands at the start of March last year. The service claims to currently have over 1 million subscribers in that market.
The tie-up means that Solcon’s audience who subscribe to Viaplay will be able to watch all action from top-tier sporting content such as motor racing’s prestigious Formula 1 (F1). Viaplay holds rights to the series in that country through a deal struck in May 2021 (before it launched in the market) which came into effect last season.
F1 is extremely popular in the Netherlands, the home nation of current driver’s world champion Max Verstappen.
Other Netherlands distribution deals Viaplay has in place include tie-ups with KPN, T-Mobile Netherlands, and VodafoneZiggo.

By GlobalDataAlexander Bastin, chief commercial officer for continental Europe and the Baltics at Viaplay Group, said: “We are happy to announce a further distribution partnership in the Netherlands, which shows the attractiveness of Viaplay. Solcon’s customers can now enjoy the world’s best sports and stellar series and films all in one place – both great value for money and ideal timing, as national hero Max Verstappen seeks to defend his Formula 1 title.”
Andries Mijnhardt, Solcon’s general manager, added: “Since the launch of Viaplay in the Netherlands, the interest from our current and new customers has been very high. We are happy to bring them such attractive offers ahead of the new Formula 1 season, and to deliver even more racing, excitement, and viewing pleasure together with Viaplay.”
Aside from its F1 rights in the Netherlands, Viaplay covers top-tier sporting properties such as soccer’s English Premier League, German Bundesliga, UEFA Europa League and Conference League, PDC darts, IHF handball, as well as various mixed martial arts and field hockey events.
In mid-December, Viaplay Group and Sweden-based telecoms firm Telia agreed to an expanded distribution deal.
The tie-up meant Telia resumed distribution of Viaplay’s streaming platform and various linear channels following a dispute between the two that saw distribution temporarily suspended at the start of October.
