RTL, the German commercial broadcaster, has snapped up exclusive coverage rights to the Berlin Marathon long-distance running event in a three-year deal.
This year’s edition of that event, set for the German capital on September 29, will mark the first time since 2010 that RTL airs the Marathon. The exclusive broadcast deal has been agreed by RTL with the SCC Events promoter.
In the intervening years, domestic broadcasting of the event has been provided by Eurosport, among others.
This year’s Berlin Marathon – the 50th edition – will involve around 50,000 runners.
In December, RTL agreed to a two-year strategic partnership with German pay-TV heavyweight Sky Deutschland, through which sports rights across motor racing and soccer will be shared.
The tie-up will involve RTL covering seven races from motor racing’s iconic Formula 1 live on free-to-air TV for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. In addition, there will be one game from English soccer’s top-tier Premier League shown on RTL every week.
The parties said that these elements marked the first part “of a more extensive partnership between RTL and Sky Deutschland – with the aim of sharing even more content in the future.”
