ProSiebenSat.1, the German commercial broadcaster, has secured free-to-air (FTA) rights to ice hockey’s IIHF World Championship through a sub-licensing deal with streaming platform DOSB New Media.

Under a multi-year agreement, which begins in 2024, the network will show 29 World Championship matches, including all games played by the German national team, until 2028.

In Germany, all games will be shown by DOSB New Media’s sports streaming service Sportdeutschland.TV from next year after the company recently secured rights to the competition through a deal with the Infront agency.

Infront is the media and marketing rights partner of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) governing body.

The 2024 edition of the IIHF World Championship will be held in the Czech Republic.

The domestic rights for the tournament are currently held by multi-channel free-to-air sports network Sport1, with this year’s competition being the last in its contract.

Sport1 also holds domestic rights to European ice hockey’s Champions Hockey League (CHL) and the Spengler Cup, the annual invitation tournament, held in Davos, Switzerland.

However, Sportdeutschland.TV will assume rights for both competitions from next year as part of its wide-ranging deal with Infront.

At the 2022 IIHF World Championship, German games were shown by Sport1 and MagentaSport, the Deutsche Telekom-owned pay-television channels, which broadcast 15 games thanks to a sub-licensing deal.
