ONE Championship to return with July event in Bangkok
ONE Championship, the Singapore-based mixed martial arts promotion, will return following the coronavirus-enforced hiatus with an event in Thailand next month.
The series will stage its ONE: No Surrender event behind closed doors in Bangkok on 31 July. It will be the first such competition in five months.
Due to strict government lockdown measures in the two countries, ONE was forced to cancel several proposed events in April and May, including four without fans in Singapore and another in Manila in the Philippines.
In addition, the organisation laid off 20 per cent of its staff this month in what it called “streamlined operations” while raising $70 million to combat the financial effects of the global health emergency.
However, with the impact of the virus easing in many parts of Asia, ONE said its flagship events would resume at an audience-free venue in Thailand, with global broadcasts.
The return of the promotion’s showpiece events comes after it staged its One Hero Series 13 and 14 events in China last weekend.
ONE is looking to follow in the footsteps of rival MMA promotion UFC, which returned last month and has held six behind-closed-doors events across USA.
