BWF finds yet more new dates for Aarhus tournament
The Badminton World Federation, in collaboration with Badminton Denmark, has scheduled new dates for the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals, the biennial national teams tournament.
The finals will now take place from 3 to 11 October.
The competition, which was originally slated for 16 to 24 May in the Danish city of Aarhus, was postponed in March until 15 to 23 August, because of the coronavirus pandemic.
However, those dates have now also been discarded, following the Danish government’s recent decision to ban large gatherings in the country until the end of August, as the virus' spread across the country continued.
After that decision, the BWF confirmed that it was seeking clarification on the future of the event.
The BWF, in a statement, has said the decision to again reschedule the tournament was taken after consulting with Badminton Denmark, event organiser Sport Event Denmark, and the Aarhus city authorities.
Thomas Lund, the BWF’s secretary general, said: “It became clear that hosting a big event… before September would be difficult.
“We are confident that we can stage a safe and successful championships on the new dates while all the time monitoring the situation closely should things change again.”
The BWF has also said that conversations about the future of the 2020 annual general meeting, and the BWF Members’ Forum, both of which were due to take place in Aarhus at the same time as the tournament, are still ongoing.
