AMC's Rehrig to join Discovery as general manager of Eurosport Digital
Discovery, the US media giant, today announced the appointment of Paul Rehrig as general manager of Eurosport Digital, the direct-to-consumer business of the pan-European sports broadcaster.
Rehrig joins from AMC Networks, the US media company, where he has been executive vice-president of digital and business development, responsible for growing revenue from global digital partnerships and building the company’s DTC subscription businesses.
In his new role at Discovery, Rehrig will oversee the development and implementation of strategies to enhance and grow Eurosport’s suite of digital DTC products, including the Eurosport App, Eurosport Player and Eurosport.com.
He is effectively the replacement for Ralph Rivera who joined North American basketball's NBA as managing director in Europe and the Middle East in January. Rivera had been managing director of Eurosport Digital.
Rehrig will be based in London and report to Peter Faricy who joined Discovery almost a year ago in the newly-created role of chief executive, global director-to-consumer, from Amazon Marketplace, the online retailer’s platform for third-party sellers where he had been vice-president and general manager.
Rehrig will work closely with Andrew Georgiou who joins Discovery in the autumn as president, Eurosport and global sports rights & sports marketing solutions from the Lagardère Sports agency where he is chief executive.
Faricy said: “We are thrilled to welcome such a distinguished leader with a proven record of launching and running successful direct-to-consumer businesses and products globally. Paul is the perfect fit to lead our outstanding Eurosport Digital team as we focus on building products that sports fans love. As we look to the exciting opportunities ahead, Paul will ensure Eurosport delivers the immersive multi-screen products and experiences that are essential for powering people’s passions and engaging targeted global communities around sport.”
Rehrig added: “I have been hugely impressed by how Eurosport has become a digital pioneer and leader in sports under Discovery’s leadership. Serving sports fans with programming and content across Europe is a significant responsibility and I’m thrilled to lead such a world-class team. There is a massive opportunity to enhance and expand Eurosport’s digital product experiences and innovate in myriad ways that more deeply engage fans and build audiences and subscribers across the region.”
One of Rehrig's principal tasks over the next 12 months will be overseeing Eurosport Digital's delivery of exclusive digital access to every minute of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games across most of Europe, as well as other premium live sport throughout the year including more than 2,500 hours of live cycling across 200 days, every court of every tennis Grand Slam in more than 33 markets and every major World Championship and World Cup event in the winter sports season.
