Top 14 final audience nears 4m in France as Toulouse claim title
Toulouse's victory over ASM Clermont in the final of the Top 14, French rugby union's top division, on Saturday evening was watched by almost 4 million people in the country.
Toulouse won 24-18 in a match that drew an audience of 3.2 million on France 2, the main channel of public-service broadcaster France Télévisions.
The audience share was 17.2 per cent, enough to win the night for the channel.
Another 792,000 people watched the Top 14 final on pay-TV's Canal Plus.
France 2 attracted an audience of 3.08 million for last year's Top 14 final between Castres and Montpellier, down from 3.7 million in 2017 and 3.2 million in 2016.
Canal Plus, the French pay-television broadcaster, holds exclusive rights in France to the Top 14 to 2022-23 in a deal worth €97 million ($109 million) per season, but the final must also be shown free-to-air as it is included in France's listed events legislation.
