MLB awards 2026 All-Star Game to Philadelphia to commemorate independence
Philadelphia has been named, seven years in advance, as the host city for Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game in 2026.
The award, which was announced on Wednesday, is intended to commemorate the 250th anniversary of USA’s Declaration of Independence from Great Britain, which was adopted in the city in 1776.
The game will be the first to take place at Citizens Bank Park, the home of the MLB’s Philadelphia Phillies, which opened in 2004.
The 1976 All-Star Game was played at Veterans Stadium, the team’s former home, to mark the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The venue also hosted the 1996 event.
Philadelphia previously staged the so-called Midsummer Classic at Shibe Park in 1943 and 1952.
This year’s All-Star Game takes place at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio on 9 July, with the 2020 event to be held at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California.
Hosts for the 2021 to 2025 editions have yet to be announced.
