Kiel named host of 2019 EHF Cup Finals
Kiel in northern Germany will host the 2019 Men's EHF Cup Finals, the closing stages of European handball’s secondary clubs competition.
THW Kiel, the club that plays its home games at the 10,285-seat Sparkassen Arena Kiel (pictured), has been selected as the host by the European Handball Federation’s executive committee following a bid process launched in October.
This season’s EHF Cup Finals, which comprise semi-finals, a third-place play-off and final, will take place on 17 and 18 May.
Viktor Szilagy, the club’s sports director, said that “as soon as we knew that we were going to participate in the EHF Cup this season, we communicated our interest in hosting the EHF Cup Finals.”
Despite playing host, THW Kiel, the three-time EHF Champions League winners, will still need to qualify for the EHF Cup Finals.
David Szlezak, managing director of EHF Marketing, which must still ratify a final hosting agreement with the club, remarked: “THW Kiel have been a strong partner of the EHF club competitions for almost three decades now and we are happy to write the next piece of history together.”
The 2009 EHF Champions League final was the last major EHF event to be played in Kiel.
Füchse Berlin and TSV Hannover-Burgdorf are the other two German sides to have qualified for the EHF Cup group stages.
DAZN, the OTT subscription broadcaster, recently acquired rights in Germany and Austria to the EHF Cup, in a two-year agreement.
